CHEMISTRY AP CREDIT FOR ENGINEERING 1ST YEARS
FALL 2024
PROFICIENCY CREDIT FORM
Standard Procedures:
Washington University undergraduate students who receive a 5 on the AP test in Chemistry will receive 3 units for Chemistry 103 and 3 units for Chemistry 104. However, receipt of these credits has no bearing on fulfillment of chemistry requirements for engineering, pre-med or any science major, and the units cannot be used to satisfy pre-requisites for Organic Chemistry. These Chemistry 103 and 104 units can be used only to satisfy general education requirements.
Exception for Engineering Students:
Engineering students with an AP Chemistry score of 5 may use this form to receive
“proficiency” credit (with 0 additional units) for Chem 111A, 112A, 151, and 152. This “proficiency” credit means that your AP score allows you to fulfill the basic chemistry requirement in the School of Engineering only. However, this proficiency credit still does not serve to fulfill pre-requisites for Organic Chemistry. Please consult your advisor or the advising staff in Engineering Undergraduate Student Services for more information about the impact of this credit university-wide or for professional schools.
Note for Premedical Students:
There are some medical schools that do not accept AP or any other placement credit. And there are medical schools that insist on upper-level course work in the same discipline for students who have received placement credit. Students anticipating a career in medicine and who take Chemistry 111A and 112A as 1st Years, even if they have an AP score of "5," will probably increase their options on schools because they will not be limited by the non-acceptance of AP credit. If you have further questions regarding this, please e-mail Jessica Allen, Health Professions Advisor for the McKelvey School of Engineering: jessicaa@wustl.edu.
