CEAF Lab Specific Training
Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering
Chemical and Environmental Analysis Facility (CEAF)
Applicable to Brauer Hall, Rooms 014, 015 and 017

All lab users must adhere to these rules for all activities performed in the lab.
This is intended as a guideline for your safety and the safety of other users in the laboratory.
Please contact the lab manager, your PI, or EH&S with any questions.

  1. General Lab Rules
    1. Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures posted by the telephone in each laboratory. Injury, exposure, spill, noxious odor (unrelated to a spill) and radioactive isotope emergency procedures are dictated by the Injury and Exposure document posted by the laboratory phone.
    2. Know the location of the fire extinguishers, eye washes, safety showers and spill kits. Report any obstruction to lab managers.
    3. Familiarize yourself with the exits from the laboratories and the basement.
      • All labs have multiple exits.
      • Basement exits:
        1. Main stairwell, Brauer Hall
        2. Stairwell adjacent to Brauer 017 entrance
        3. More stairwells and exits can be found in both Green and Whitaker Halls.
    4. The Emergency Assembly Point is EAP #33 in the lawn between McKelvey, Green, Brauer, Whitaker and Jubel Halls.
    5. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is located on the ground floor in the Brauer Hall lobby.
    6. Food and drink are never allowed in Brauer Hall rooms 014, 015 and 017.
    7. Sandals and open-toed shoes are not allowed.
    8. Shorts are not allowed.
    9. Keep your lab work area clean and uncluttered.
    10. Label ALL containers legibly with the chemical name, date, your name, concentration and hazard class.
    11. Any “new” chemical or sample type brought into the lab must be approved by lab managers or the CEAF committee. A Material Safety Data Sheet or equivalent may be required.
    12. Please immediately report any unsafe condition to the lab managers.
    13. Annual EH&S safety training is required to access the CEAF laboratories. Annual EH&S safety training is the responsibility of you and your PI.
    14. All of your lab rules regarding sample handling, disposal, waste, horseplay, personal protective equipment apply in the CEAF laboratories.
  1.
  2. Personal Protective Equipment
    1. Eye protection is always required.
    2. Lab coats and gloves are required when working with any hazardous substances including acids, solvents potentially hazardous substances.
    3. Only work with acids, bases, solvents, corrosives, VOCs, reactive substances, oxidizers, toxins, dust-forming material and unknowns in the fume hoods.
    4. Check that fume hoods are operating correctly before use.
    5. Do not store chemicals and samples in the fume hoods.
    6. When using a vertical sash fume hood, a glass panel should be between your face and the interior of the hood.
    7. The safe operating height is clearly marked on the side of each fume hood. Do not operate a horizontal sash fume hood with the sash above the mark.
  3. Compressed and liquified gases.
    1. Lab managers monitor gas cylinders. Please let managers know if an in-use cylinder is low.
    2. All cylinders must be securely attached to either a wall bracket or lab bench bracket.
    3. Label all cylinders either as full, in use or empty.
    4. Cap all cylinders not in use.
    5. Cap and secure all cylinders to the cylinder cart when moving.
    6. You need liquid nitrogen training to use liquid nitrogen.
    7. Always wear thermal gloves when working with liquid nitrogen.
  4. Instruments with heated zones and cryogens.
    1. Instrument-specific training will highlight thermal risks with each instrument.
    2. If uncertain, please always check with lab managers prior to operating or adjusting any instrument that poses a heat or cryogenic risk.
  5. Use of equipment and lab space.
    1. All instrument users must be trained by lab managers on instrument use.
      • Individuals can receive further training on their group-specific applications but still require initial training by lab managers.
    2. All lab users must receive lab-specific training from the lab managers to obtain unrestricted access to the labs.
    3. A signed laboratory user agreement may be required prior to laboratory use and may be periodically required to be re-signed.
    4. Re-training on instruments or lab rules may be required at the discretion of the lab managers or CEAF committee.
    5. Access to the lab and any instrument can be revoked at the discretion of the lab managers or CEAF committee.
    6. All non-standard instrument use requires prior review and consultation with the lab managers.
    7. Do not remove instrument covers without the permission of the lab managers or CEAF committee.
  6. Laboratory Waste
    1. Some instruments have dedicated waste streams (TOC, ICP, freeze dryer condensate, etc.). Laboratory managers will arrange for safe disposal of dedicated waste streams.
    2. The CEAF is a shared facility and is not responsible for storage or disposal of customer samples and chemicals. The user must make safe arrangements for the safe transport of their materials both to the lab and out of the lab.
    3. Do not pour anything except pure and tap water into the sinks.
